Modern Foreign Language - KS4

All pupils at Broadgreen International School have the opportunity to study a language at GCSE level. For our pupils who follow the Yellow Pathway, it is compulsory that these pupils sit a GCSE examination in either French or Spanish. Pupils following other pathways are given the option in Year 9.

The GCSE programme begins at the start of Year 10 and lasts for two years. Pupils have three hours of language learning in Year 10 and two hours in Year 11. We follow the AQA specification for both French and Spanish.  Currently, pupils complete 2 written and 2 oral Controlled Assessments during Years 10 + 11.  These tasks are completed under exam conditions and together are worth 60% of the GCSE.  In May of Year 11, pupils sit a reading exam (worth 20%) and a listening exam (worth 20%).

MFL GCSE

Following a GCSE course in French or Spanish should encourage students to derive enjoyment and benefit from language learning. Learners should recognise that their linguistic knowledge, understanding and skills help them to take their place in a multilingual global society and also provide them with a suitable basis for further study and practical use of the language. The GCSE should prepare learners to make informed decisions about further learning opportunities and career choices.

The GCSE specification in French and Spanish will enable learners to:

develop understanding of the language in a variety of contexts
develop knowledge of the language and language learning skills
develop the ability to communicate effectively in the language

Pupils will be required to:

listen and respond to different types of language
communicate in speech for a variety of purpose
read and respond to different types of written language
