Inside the Classroom…

Broadgreen International School has offered the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) since 1992. It provides students post-16 with a qualification to reflect the changing world and to enable students to become global adults in an international context.

The IBDP is a compelling alternative to A Levels offering students a truly broad and integrated curriculum. High standards are maintained through an assessment pattern that encourages critical thinking and intellectual enquiry. Typically, students take one subject from each of the subject domains, three at standard level and three at higher level. The IBDP is a qualification accepted not only at all UK universities but also at universities across the globe. We are unique in that we are the only state school in the city to be authorised and offering the IBDP. We welcome post-16 students from other schools in Liverpool. We also receive students from abroad who wish to study the IBDP. Over the last three years students from Russia, Ukraine, Canada, Sri Lanka, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Turkey, Kenya and India have studied at Broadgreen. This has added an international ethos and dimension to our sixth form.

In addition to these subjects, students follow a course in Theory of Knowledge, produce an extended essay on a topic of their choice and perform some kind of community service, which encourages students to share their energy and special talents with others. Students may, for example, participate in theatre or musical productions, sports and community service activities. Broadgreen and its partners are able to offer an incredible amount of opportunities to our students, allowing them to gain important experiences as part of this programme. IB students at Broadgreen achieve well and are successful at entering higher education. Ofsted’s last inspection report concluded that the IB curriculum was excellent.
