RSL Music Practitioners Technical Award - Level 2 Qualification

RSL Vocational Qualifications are specialist music and performing arts qualifications that offer students the chance to learn a diverse range of industry focused skills.

Equivalent to GCSE A*-C grades they cover an expansive range of subjects throughout the music and performing arts industries.

Here at Broadgreen International School the music students will focus on music performance and rehearsal skills as well as pupils working as a team to put on an event.

The course allows for pupils to progress into higher level of music education of into the industry itself.  The aim is to allow the individual to develop the range of skills needed to progress them forward as operating musicians.


Music Rehearsal Skills  (8 credits)                                         

Organising a Music event (8 credits)

Live Music Performance (8 credits)  

Through these units learners will:

  • Develop and understand music theory
  • Understand contextual issues relating to musical style, audience and the music industry
  • Rehearse and display musician skills
  • Initiate and develop repertoire
  • Rehearse effectively and perform music live
  • Work as a team to stage a musical event
  • Use music technology efficiently

Minimum number of credits to pass = 20

There is no exam for this qualification and evidence will be based on portfolio work and live performances / recordings.

Form of assessment

These qualifications are 40% externally assessed and 60% internally assessed. The externally assessed core unit takes the form of a timed assessment under controlled conditions based on an assignment set and marked by RSL. The remaining units are optional units and are internally assessed [i.e. staff in centres provide assessment opportunities for, and assess the work produced by learners].

Unit Format Unit specifications contain the title, unit code, learning outcomes [what has to be learnt], assessment requirements [evidence on which the learner is assessed], unit content, suggested delivery ideas, suggested activity ideas and recommended evidence.

Bands of Assessment There are three bands of assessment [pass, merit and distinction] as well as an 'unclassified' band for each unit and for the qualification as a whole. Each unit is accompanied by a detailed grading criteria document.

External Moderation of Internally Assessed Units External moderation ensures that all assessments are carried out to the same standard by objective sampling and re-assessment of learners' work. Teams of external moderators are appointed, trained and standardised by RSL.
